Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – The legendary Copacabana Palace hotel, a century-old jewel of Rio de Janeiro, is adorned with new colors under the hand of French artist Daniel Buren. Recently inaugurated, this temporary transformation introduces a new artistic dimension to the building until September 30.
A Bold Collaboration With Carte Blanche
Daniel Buren, an emblematic figure of contemporary art, known for his interventions in public spaces such as the columns of the Palais-Royal in Paris, was offered carte blanche for his project at the Copacabana Palace. He chose to embellish all of the windows on the facade with brightly colored vinyl films. Yellow, blue, pink, green, and red now envelop the tiles, offering a spectacular view of the famous beach and ocean.
Chance at the Heart of Color Choice
The 85-year-old artist explains that the choice of colors was made at random, reflecting his philosophy that all hues, as long as they contrast, can coexist harmoniously. This minimalist but impactful approach allows each observer to have a unique experience, influenced by the orientation of the windows and the time of day.
A Light Show for All
At night, only the windows lit from the inside reveal their colors, creating a luminous ballet visible to everyone, hotel guests or simple passers-by. In addition, the entrance pergola is transformed by these same vinyl films, projecting a carpet of colored lights onto the ground, enriching the welcome of visitors.
“Colorful Stops”: An Artistic Series in Luxury Hotels
This intervention at the Copacabana Palace is part of a series of works entitled “Colorful Stops”, produced in hotels of the Belmond brand, owned by the French group LVMH. The first work in this series appeared at Mount Nelson in Cape Town, introducing colorful columns around a fountain, confirming Daniel Buren’s interest in luxurious and historic spaces.
An Invitation to Wonder
Daniel Buren’s work at the Copacabana Palace is not only a celebration of the hotel’s 100 years; it is an open invitation to all to rediscover this emblematic space in a new light, marked by creativity and artistic audacity. She reminds us that art can transform the most classic places into new visual experiences, accessible to a wide audience.
