Dismantling of a Network of Fake Banksys in Spain: An International Art Scam

In a major operation, Spanish police have revealed they have shut down the activities of a group accused of producing and selling imitations of works by Banksy, the world-famous British street artist. These counterfeits, sold for up to 1,500 euros each, have found buyers in Catalonia but also on the international scene, affecting countries such as the United States. This discovery highlights not only the audacity of forgers but also the constant challenges facing the art market in the face of the proliferation of counterfeits.

Context and Dismantling:

The Catalan authorities, through Mossos d’Esquadra, initiated an investigation in mid-2023 after the detection of false works attributed to Banksy on various online sales platforms. Their perseverance led to the discovery of a workshop located in Zaragoza, in the neighboring region of Aragon. This place, run by a couple passionate about the urban art of Banksy and plagued by financial difficulties, became the cradle of these fraudulent creations. Initially sold at 80 euros to intermediaries, the price of these imitations was then inflated using false certificates of authenticity to reach points of sale.

The Operation and its Consequences:

Four individuals were arrested in connection with this network: the two operators of the workshop responsible for creating the fake pieces, and two accomplices with knowledge in the field of art, accused of having marketed these counterfeits. These arrests highlight a malicious practice aimed at exploiting Banksy’s fame to generate illicit profits. The network managed to sell at least 25 works across Europe and the United States, thus accumulating a total amount of fraud estimated at 10,000 euros.
