Shizuoka 2019 Cask no. 1222 for Asta Morris – Asta Morris – b. 2023 – 500 ml aux enchères
Shizuoka Distillery 2019 – Asta Morris (65,2%)
The Shizuoka 2019 Asta Morris bottling is a very young but extremely intense Japanese single malt, showing the early character of the distillery through a powerful cask-strength presentation. At 65,2%, this is not a subtle whisky; it is a raw, energetic snapshot of Shizuoka’s spirit combined with the bold influence of an independent bottling approach.
Nose
Explosive and slightly spirity at first, as expected at this strength and age. The nose opens with fresh green apple, pear skin, and lemon zest, quickly followed by vanilla, barley sugar, and fresh cereal notes.
There is a lightly smoky or toasted edge in the background (depending on the cask influence), alongside floral tones and grassy freshness. The alcohol is prominent and needs time in the glass, but underneath there is a very clear, bright spirit character.
Palate
Very powerful, direct, and assertive. The arrival is dominated by sweet malt, green fruit, and citrus oil, with an immediate wave of heat from the high ABV.
Mid-palate shows apple, pear, and light tropical hints, combined with vanilla cream, biscuit, and raw barley sweetness. Oak influence is present but still developing: white pepper, ginger, and light toasted wood.
Despite its youth, the structure is surprisingly clean, though clearly not yet fully integrated.
Water is strongly recommended, as it opens the whisky significantly and softens the alcohol burn, revealing more fruity and floral detail.
Finish
Long, warm, and slightly sharp. It fades through citrus peel, cereal grain, and oak spice, with a lingering grassy, slightly herbal note and gentle heat.
Conclusion
This Shizuoka 2019 Asta Morris is a very young, high-impact single malt that prioritises raw spirit character and intensity over maturity. It is more about potential and distillery DNA than refinement, but it shows impressive energy and clarity for its age.
