Jean Leymarie collection traces 50 years of friendship with the artists
Jean Leymarie was never collector. However, on December 5, the Artcurial House will propose to auction off a together 20 works by the greatest artists of the 20th century. Among them Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Zao Wou – Ki, Nicolas de Staël, Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder…
Subtitled "the friendship, the only homeland", a title borrowed from a book of Henri Cartier Bresson, the sale will offer auction of a friendship between Jean Leymarie and talented artists of the twentieth century.

Become more young curator of Museum of France at the age of 31 by taking the direction of the Museum of Grenoble, Jean Leymarie started a brilliant career in the middle of the art. After the head of the national Museum of modern art in Paris and exempt of history courses at the universities of Geneva and Lausanne, he became Director of studies at the school of the Louvre, then joined the Academy of France in Rome in 1978. Throughout his career, he also organizes prestigious exhibitions and wrote many monographs of artists.

20 works that offer a complete panorama of the art of the 20th century
The 20 works that will be presented in the sale offer a representative diversity of art of the 20th century. Oil on canvas of Zao Wou – Ki 17.02.71 – 12.05.76, estimated to be between 450 000 and €650 000 alongside a stabile metal "Untitled" Alexander Calder, estimated at the same amount. A picture of Joan Miró, "Character" of 1974 and estimated 250 000 / €350 000 to expose talented alongside works of the Giacometti brothers.

The Artcurial sale catalogue is prefaced by the girls of the artist, Isabelle and Anne Leymarie, recounting in detail the relations of friendship between Jean Leymarie and these great artists.
"From a peasant family in the Lot, he discovered painting during the war when René Huygue, to ensure that on some of the treasures of the Louvre, hidden in the castle of Montal, met him at the village where my father lived and offered him a job. It between as an assistant at the Louvre to Liberation, meeting, in particular, Bonnard and Matisse, then in 1950, thirty-one years old, see entrust management of the Museum of Grenoble, becoming the youngest curator of France. It is at this time that he became friends with Pierre Reverdy, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, and Vincent Willem van Gogh, the son of Theo, with whom he stayed in Laren, Holland. Miró, common in Spain and in the South of France, Calder, who received it with our mother Marie – Paule, home in Saché, Touraine, Sima, Poliakoff, of Scott, he saw in Antibes, Diego Giacometti, Balthus, who welcomed him at his chalet in Rossinière, Switzerland, Chagall, with whom he made a trip to Israel at the inauguration of the stained glass windows made by it to the synagogue of the Hadassah hospital Alberto and Diego Giacometti, with whom he would spend hours in Geneva and Paris, to discuss art, Zao Wou – Ki, met a few years after the arrival of the Chinese painter in France, were all faithful friends.
